Rhum Clement VSOP Rhum Vieux Agricole. Habitation Clement, Le François, Martinique — aged a minimum of four years in virgin Limousin barriques and re-charred bourbon casks by the Cellar Master at one of Martinique's most historic estate distilleries, producing a brilliant mahogany color, roasted cocoa bean aroma, and a smooth mellow character across a body full of coconut, banana creme brulee, nut, and dried fruit flavors finishing with a long fade of charred sugarcane, coconut custard, peppery spices, and delicate wet minerals.

Habitation Clement occupies one of Martinique's most historically significant estates — Domaine de l'Acajou, purchased in 1887 by Homère Clément, the mayor of Le François, at the peak of the island's sugar industry collapse. Rather than abandon the plantation, Clément transformed it into a rhum agricole producer, distilling directly from freshly pressed sugarcane juice in the style of the great French brandies he had admired during his studies in Paris. That decision created the Clément legacy and helped establish Martinique's identity as the home of the world's finest rhum agricole.

The VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) is Clément's entry into the aged range: a minimum of four years across two cask types. Virgin Limousin barriques — the same French oak species used in cognac production — contribute vanilla, dried fruit, and structure. Re-charred bourbon casks add the caramel, coconut, and spice dimension. The Cellar Master's alchemy across these two wood types creates the characteristic Clément aged rhum signature: refined, complex, and deeply expressive of Martinique's AOC terroir.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Brilliant mahogany color. Roasted cocoa bean aroma with warm caramel, exotic spice, and dried fruit leading.
  • Palate: Soft, silky entry with a moderately off-dry body full of coconut, banana creme brulee, nut, and dried fruit flavors. The interplay of Limousin and bourbon cask influence is seamless.
  • Finish: Long fade of charred sugarcane, coconut custard, peppery spices, and delicate wet minerals. The volcanic Martinique terroir expresses itself in the mineral close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Clement VSOP taste like? Roasted cocoa bean, warm caramel, exotic spice, and dried fruit on the nose. Soft, silky palate with coconut, banana creme brulee, nut, and dried fruit. Long finish of charred sugarcane, coconut custard, peppery spices, and wet minerals.
  • What does VSOP mean? Very Superior Old Pale — a designation borrowed from the cognac world indicating the youngest component has aged at least four years. For Clément VSOP, this means a minimum four years across virgin Limousin barriques and re-charred bourbon casks.
  • What is Habitation Clement? One of Martinique's most historically significant estate distilleries, founded in 1887 by Homère Clément at Domaine de l'Acajou in Le François. Clément was a visionary who transformed a failing sugar plantation into a rhum agricole producer — and in doing so, helped establish Martinique's identity as the home of the world's finest AOC rhum.
  • Why two cask types? Virgin Limousin French oak (the cognac wood) contributes vanilla, dried fruit, and structure without heavy char. Re-charred bourbon casks add caramel, coconut, and spice. The combination creates a more complex flavor profile than either wood type alone can achieve, and it's the foundation of Clément's distinctive aged rhum signature.
